How to work with UTN Prime Stone
UTN Prime Stone with fiberglass backing can be used as a decorative cladding for both indoors and outdoors. When installed correctly and sealed/maintained with the correct sealer for the application, UTN Stone like all natural stone will last for years.
LAYOUT: Place sheets out either horizontal or vertical as preferred in the area to be applied. It is recommended to number the sheets for easy relocation. The above steps also help to evenly spread the variation in the stone textures.
CUTTING: It is best to cut with tin snips, UTN Stone can also be cut with a Wet Saw or Metal Shears.
SEALERS: It is recommended to pre-seal UTN Stone Sheets prior to installation; this protects the sheets from adhesives or grout during installation. The same sealers as used for slate or stone tiles can be used for sealing. Always test the sealer, make sure it is correct for the applications desired protection.
ADHESIVES: It is very important to spread the adhesive to cover the whole sheet by either spreading on the substrate or the sheet itself or both do not just do beads.
If the application is outdoors, consideration to thermal expansion should be taken into account. We have tested adhesives and can provide or suggest for your country location.
TROWELS & HAND ROLLERS: A trowel similar to what is used in tile applications can be used. The size will depend on the area of installation but it is recommended that a straight trowel with small teeth works best. Use a hand roller to remove trapped air between the UTN Stone sheets and the surface it is applied to. It is always best to start from the middle and work outwards.
GROUT JOINTS: UTN Stone can be installed with a grout joint similar to a tile installation or it can be butt joint closely together similar to a stone slab installation. Always take into account the installation environment allowing enough gaps for expansion.
PRECAUTIONS & SAFETY: Due to the fibreglass composition of the backing materials & Natural Silica from the stone, precautions must be taken when cutting & sanding. It is recommended to always use proper gloves, goggles or safety glasses, and a dust mask.
